Five years ago today, I was a bride, marrying my best buddy, Chris at the Lakes Country Club in Columbus, Ohio.

A few funny things about my day.....I got married in a puddle of water about 3 inches deep in a tent while the rain poured down outside; I was the only one who got wet and the water from the puddle kept crawling up the underlayers of my dress; we walked down the aisle to Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love"; I found my brother in the valet closet during the reception watching UK-Cincy on a 6 inch tv; someone brought a feather boa; as much as I love college basketball I packed my NCAA bracket in the bag with my dress...what a day!

Happy Anniversary, Chris! Here's to always celebrating our anniversary watching the NCAA tournament. I wouldn't want it any other way!!!

Julie is a friend of mine that I met years ago at the PhotoPlus Expo in NYC. She is a photographer in Middletown (www.jewelphoto.com). I was excited when she asked me to shoot her headshots in her studio. I don't do a lot of studio work, so, for me, this was a fun way to spend the afternoon.

What I learned at WPPI

I attended WPPI in Las Vegas last week. WPPI is the annual convention for the Wedding and Portrait Photographers International (www.wppionline.com), an organization I am proud to be a part of. At first, I thought the real value of attending was just for the trade show, seeing new products, meeting with vendors....but now I go for the education and the networking.

Here are a few things I learned this year at WPPI...

*Las Vegas may be sin city, but it is my favorite city.
Vegas was the first trip my husband and I took while we were dating, and I fell in love with being in love there. I couldn't imagine going to Vegas any time without him. The dinners out, staying up late, blackjack, the shows....it is always more fun with Chris there. This year was special because we are celebrating our 5 year anniversary this month!! I even talked him into walking the tradeshow floor with me. :)

*It is weird being on the other side of the camera.
I took full advantage of the convention by asking a fellow photographer-and long lost bff, Jacquelynn Buck (www.jacquelynnbuck.com), to take a couple of portraits of Chris and I all dressed up for dinner on Saturday as an anniversary gift. What I got was a full 50 minute professional portrait shoot on location at the Aria Hotel. What I never realized is how exhausting it is to be the subject...and in heels too. I learned a lot about the rhythm of a session that I never knew before.

*It's ok to be a dork.
Chris does NOT take photos. Every time we go on vacation I have a grand plan to take my camera and have these great photos of us, but it ends up being photos of him with the scenery in every shot. He won't touch my camera, and thinks the handheld one is beneath him. :) Over time, this has made me not want to take my camera on any trip we took. I always cared about what others would think, I thought I would be the only one with a big camera, which might look dorky to the others.
I met up with a group of girls at WPPI who changed my mind. Krista, Sandra, Nataschia, and Rosita, thanks for teaching me it was okay to take my camera everywhere! We met up for dinner on Thursday evening and they each brought their cameras--I didn't, for reasons above. There always seems to be more things to shoot when you are in a group of photographers and before we even left the hotel, I was KICKING myself for forgetting it. They issued challenges to our wait staff at Hard Rock, taking photos of the food, everything. Sure, people were looking at us like we were crazy, but they were making art. Collectively, they have this passion for photography that was so inspiring. The next night, we all met up, and I brought my camera too. I wasn't afraid of what anyone thought, I was shooting!
Photography is a little dorky. It's technical, gadgety, but it's also what I love to do.

*Photography is still my hobby.
When I started shooting more for "work," I really forgot how much I loved the art of photography for myself. I used to give myself assignments and make prints for myself. When something is your job, you sometimes forget why you loved it in the first place. This past week, I got to shoot for the best client...ME! It was nice to remember why I loved it.

I learned a lot this past week, and am ready to start the season this weekend (yay Chrissy and Donald) with a renewed energy and tons of inspiration! Can't wait to see what I learn next year!!!

Think of it as a hibernation! This winter I have been putting the finishing touches on a new FAB blog. It has taken me longer than I anticipated, but the new blog will debut after I return from the WPPI convention in VEGAS! I will have the link to the new blog here when I return.

The Wedding of Leigh & Charlie

Leigh & Charlie were married on October 18 at two of my favorite locations in New Haven: Battell Chapel and the New Haven Lawn Club. There was a slight bird theme with the birdcage veil, owl wrap, and birdcage centerpieces, which fit both the bride and the location well. As you can see, we had a great time shooting despite the weather.
I never mind rain on the wedding day, unless it makes the bride utterly distraught or if outdoor ceremonies have to be changed. I have to say that the bridal photos of Leigh at the hotel would not be the same without the water drops on the windows. The cloudy day gave us the perfect light both at the church and for outdoor photos at the Lawn Club.
Be sure to check out the couple's only shot together at the hotel. The couple did not want to see each other before the ceremony, but were getting ready at the same hotel. I thought it would be fun to get that great portrait of them together without them seeing each other. He is in the elevator!

Sarah & Stephen were married on a gorgeous day near the end of October at Saint Clements Castle. The castle really set the mood for a fun and regal event. The bride looked amazing and everything went smoothly. I'd say it was a perfect day for a great couple.

The Wedding of Kristin & Tom

Kristin and Tom were married on October 11 in Lake George. I love being in the mountains in the fall and this setting did not disappoint. Mother Nature gave us some pretty awesome props for this wedding: great fall weather, leaves, pine cones, sunset over the lake....one of the prettiest sites I have been this year.
The ceremony and reception took place in a summer camp and was littered with abandoned cabins. It was very Friday the 13th.

Charlotte ("Charlie") and Ben were married on October 10 at La Mirage in North Haven. I was impressed with how Charlie really paid attention to small details for her wedding to make it uniquely her: choosing kick-butt snakeskin boots, red tips on her nails, a red sash around her dress, and the rubber ducky cake top. Those small touches kept the guests guessing all night.

The Wedding of Kathleen & Chris

Kathleen & Chris were married on October 3 in Stratford, with the reception following at the Norwalk Aquarium. The Aquarium is a great place to hold an event. LOVE the shark tanks. The wedding was a fun, young crowd who danced and partied all night despite the crazy hard rain outside. Table 11, you rock!

The Wedding of Lynn & Mark

Lynn & Mark were married on Sept 25 at one of my favorite spots, the New Haven Lawn Club. To me, there are a number of things that make a wedding great and this wedding had so many personal touches: limes in the bride's bouquet, mulberry shoes for the bride, a custom-designed monogram for the wedding, Yankee & Red Sox garters on a night when the teams were playing each other for a playoff berth, a wagon carrying the ring bearer, a red velvet wedding cake made by Aunt Lauri, the chicken dance and Ollie's photo hanging from the bouquet.
I'd like to think that I work with couples whose wedding I would also want to attend as a guest, and you can bet if I hadn't been there, I would have wanted to.

Audrey & Bruce were married on August 9 at the Mystic Marriott. What was supposed to be an amazing outdoor garden wedding, turned into an amazing inside ballroom wedding.
Highlight of the evening? For me, it was watching the bride's brother/ringbearer, Jack, request a slew of songs from the DJ. Which song got the most response? The Imperial March, or the Darth Vader theme. The bride and groom are huge fans of Star Wars and Jack thought of the idea all on his own. What a great kid!

Amy & Patrick celebrated their wedding with all their family and friends on July 11 at the Boathouse in Hartford. There were fire trucks at their ceremony, and police cars/horses/mobile HQ at their reception. AND fireworks for both.
I always enjoy seeing my brides again after their weddings, but this was a bonus, seeing all the new friendly faces I had met just a week before.
The bridal party rode into the Boathouse on the Hartford Belle and danced the night away. The fireworks made an awesome nightcap.

The Wedding of Amy & Patrick, Part One: THE BEACH

The story of Amy and Patrick's love story is a great one. As a kid, He spent summers at Cape Cod, she also summered at Eastham, Cape Cod. He's a teacher, and she's a teacher. He's a volunteer firefighter and firefighters are in her family. Especially living in the same part of Connecticut, it was only a matter of time before these too met, fell in love and got married.
The happy couple were married in Eastham, Mass, (Cape Cod) on July 4 with an intimate gathering of family and friends. The bridal party arrived at the beach via fire truck! Lovely weather, lovely group of people. My husband and I had a great time getting to really know everyone that weekend.

Path of Light Hospice Gala

Recently I had the chance to be a part of something very special: the Visiting Nurse and Hospice Care 1st Annual Path of Light Gala. I got involved almost by accident, but feel great having met and worked with the staff and volunteers over the past year. This event was a HUGE success, meeting our $100,000 goal, and it was FUN. Last weekend, we did our family portraits. I love self-timers...I was able to set up the shot and then run like mad to get into the photo. No, we don't have kids, but Ellie Mae our mini-dachshund puppy sure acts like one. These were taken in my in-laws yard, because I knew they would have more leaves than us.

Dawn & Leigh were married this past Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in New Haven. (that's right, I am already ready to show some of the images!)
The weather was beyond perfect and we found a great spot shoot their bridal portraits nearby.
The wedding was a lot of fun, and I was honored to be a part of their day! Congratulations!

Last weekend, we squeezed in a Family Portrait Session in what was a very cloudy cold fall day. It was the first time the temperature had dropped all year! Yeah fall.

I love shooting Family Portraits in the FALL! The colors, the pumpkins, the sweaters....getting excited already.

Portrait sessions take place on-location at the location of your choice (within reason). I have a portable studio, and can accommodate indoor or outdoor requests. Sessions take place on Sundays and are $150.

Don't forget to get your Family Portraits done between Oct 10-Nov 15 and help me contribute to the Stamford Hospice Organization.

Hi all. This Holiday Season, I will be hosting a Family Portraits Fundraiser for the Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care of SW CT.

It's very simple. Call today to schedule your family portraits session during Oct 10-Nov 15 and a portion of your sales and session fee will go to help the Hospice programs in our area. You can give back to the community while getting those family portraits updated.

The sessions are all on-location at the location of your choosing. Sessions can include full families, just children, pets, or any combination.

This week, I am shooting some promo work for Pottery Barn Kids. I haven't shot a ton of studio work this year because my wedding business has taken off so much. So I enlisted the help of two different neighbors and their kids for test shots in my studio. We were having so much fun, I hated for the session to be over!

Session fee is just $50 and is payable by check or credit card. Shoot me an email at info@mistyenright.com when you are ready to reserve your spot!

Appointment times are as follows: 10 am, 10:30 am, 11 am, 11:30 am, 2:30 pm, 3 pm, and 3:30 pm.

Because of their brevity, Mini Portrait Sessions are intended for 1-2 children during one appointment time.

Mini Portrait Sessions for Children are designed with YOU in mind. For those who don't have a ton of time but want fun, professional portraits of their children. For those who don't like the "posed" and forced look of studio shots.

Mini Portrait Sessions last only 30 minutes and can easily fit into your schedule. Appointment times vary by location and are reserved with a $50 Session Fee.
